By "today", I mean bands/artists that haven't been around or famous for too long (15 years ago max.), so I'm not talking about Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Van Halen, etc. Here are my choices:
>> John Mayer
>> Ray Toro (My Chemical Romance)
>> Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day)

You don't have to choose from my choices, but put your own up.

I know Green Day has been around for more than 15 years, but they've only been famous for about 12 or 13.

I'm not saying that they have to be BETTER than the classic greats, but just the best of today's [newer] acts.

Mike Mccready and Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam. Tom Morello from Audioslave.Jack White from The White Stripes and The Raconteurs. And I finish this opinion with my favorite bandleader:Dave Matthews. They created their own sound and like all the previously mentioned bands, never put out a bad album.

I'd have to say Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta. He has amazing skill, and can manipulate the instrument completely to his will, but he's extremely tasteful--he knows where and when to use his chops. In addition, he has a great live guitar sound, which is pretty rare these days.

Tom Delonge (of blink 182 and angels and airwaves)

The guitarists from any new metal bands are ridiculous at their instruments. Even if you don't like the music, you have to give recognition that what those guitarists are doing are very practiced, skillful, and just plain awesome! I would have to say the lead guitarist for Dragon Force would be at the top of my list.
