Are there really male and female avocado trees? If so, do they need to be side by side for the fruit to grow?

Yes, there are male and female Avocado trees. I believe they have to be minimum of 8 years old to fruit. The male and female generally have to be close enough that the same bees will visit both trees. I would say your yard or your neighbors on either side would be close enough.
