So I set up my tank (5 gal), completed the cycle, and all of my test readings are fine. Ammonia is at 0. For some reason though, the water is still cloudy. I did a 25% water change, and that didn't seem to help. Is it safe to put a fish or two in? Will it just clear up after a while? I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

we had the same problem.whats wrong is that the filter in the pump is not fine enough to clean the water what we have done is get a cushion thing from the pet shop and placed it by the out gang from the water pump and now the water is Cristal clear.

it´s not going to harm fish if you put them in the water as it now is so long as the water tests are safe.

The filter might not be working right, is there charcoal in the filter?
If the filter is working right , the water should be clear in no time especially with such a small tank. We have a 125 gal. tank and if we clean the tank, the water is only cloudy for about an hour.
Be sure to check your filter and talk to a fishexpert in your pet store.
Some fish though don't care if the water is cloudy. But better safe than sorry.
Good luck!

I am having the same thing occur. It seem like it is just the time of year causing my cloudy water because I can change it and it is perfectly clear, then the next day it is back cloudy again. It doesn't seem to have affected Moby, that's my fish. It has been getting cloudy for over a month now.

It has been my experience that the water will clear up on its own. I have a 30 gallon tank and it does this every time I do a partial or a whole water change. I have tropicals. It seems that goldfish are much harder to take care of and the water needs to be cleaned more often. Good luck.

It'll clear up after a while.....my fish tank used to do that all the time when I'd change the water out of it.

i've been in this situation before, first of all if the fish are up at the top of the tank looking like they need to get air, then you should buy a bottle of aqua safe [it worked for me] drop some in and then it might get clean, and keep trying to clean the water, or maybe something is wrong with your filter.

5 gal is pretty small.Do you have a filtering system set up?dont rush and put any fish in that water until its clear.water changes at this stage only interferes with the cycling.wait a week.

Did you rinse the gravel before you put it in the tank? Some gravel is very dusty. Did you add anything to your tank to get it started? It could just be a bacterial bloom; nothing to worry about.

it is a bacterial bloom, but the problem with that is that it doesn;t always go away. trust me when i say this you should go to a pet store and spend about 3 bucks on this liquid called AQUA-CLEAR and i bet u that it will clear up with 12 hours. trust me i had the same problem with my 29 gallon.
