what would make a sony vaios fn comands stop working?

it is as if the whole keyboard has been mixed up.

i have the exact same problem. i have just plugged a keyboard in to the usb

Hey I got the same problem 6 months after I bought my Vaio. I just choose to stop using the function key -- rather than taking it to the store- i dont trust those store guys - i feel they'll mess my system even more....

It sounds like your keyboard layout it set up wrong if you look at your keyboard settings in "regonal settings" on the control panel and make sure it it selected to UK or US (or where ever you are) or you will need to reinstall you keyboard drivers. They can be found on the Sony Recovary Disk.

Have you checked for the latest bios firmware from http://vaio.sony-europe.com/view/View.action?site=ite_en_GB
Another area to check is that you haven't disabled the Fn exe program in your startup (msconfig).
