I gave a $500 money order to someone for a laptop. I've been asking for the laptop for a few month now, but he just makes up excuses. I don't want to be ruid about asking for it back, besides he probably already cashed it out. Is there any way I can get my money back? And how long do I have till the money order receipt expires?

Why are you trying to get your money back from the money order company? Did they make the deal for you and the laptop? Why are they at fault for your bad judgment? You can take your friend or whoever to Civil Court and settle your dispute about this laptop and alleged payment of $500, hope you have more then just your money order receipt, you will need more proof to your allegations.

You don't want to be RUDE? Write a letter asking for the money back. Send it via registered mail, and keep a copy. If you don't get any results that way, it is time to talk to the police, and probably a lawyer.
