Antarctica!

2007-01-25 08:48:24 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

The largest "traditional" desert on earth (i.e. hot, dry, sandy) is the Sahara desert in northern Africa. However, the official scientific definition of what constitutes a desert has only to do with precipitation levels (rain and snow) and is not dependent on temperature. By those standards, Antarctica is technically the world's largest desert region, as it has very little precipitation. It may seem like there is a lot of precipitation there, looking at all the snow, but that is built up over many years and never melts. There is very little snowfall from day to day.

The world's largest desert is technically Antarctica but it is melting because of global warming. The conventional answer is the Sahara Desert in Africa which is the size of the United States.

Thr world's largest desert is actually the continent of Antarctica; it is the world's driest place. It receives less than two inches of precipitation annually. Antarctica is 5,5 square miles (14,245,000 square kilometers) in area.

Outside of polar regions, Northern Africa's Sahara Desert is the world's largest desert at more than 3.5 million square miles (9 million square kilometers), which is slightly smaller that the size of the United States, the world's fourth largest country. The Sahara strectches from Mauritania to Egypt and Sudan.

I believe it's the Gobi desert in Mongolia. Everyone forgets about it because it's a cold desert. Most people think of deserts as hot places, but they're really areas of very little rainfall, regardless of the temperature.
