I highly recommend The Mosser Hotel San Francisco, at around $77/night, it's a three-star hotel, but service and facilities are good. Good for people traveling on a budget .

I like the coffee counter and Cafe Kuletto which are located in the Villa Florence Hotel at 225 Powell St. I love their lobby. They actually bake their goods in a bakery in the building.
I have never seen their rooms, but if I visited SF that is where I would like to stay. Hotel personnel are very helpful and nice plus the hotel is right in the heart of Union Square, not on a seedy sidestreet.
I used to work a 1 1/2 blocks away, therefore that was my early morning coffee and pastry place. In the winter, I would sit at a table near the fireplace.

Joie de Vivre Hospitality has several hotels near Union Square in various price ranges. Try the Hotel Bijou, the Maxwell Hotel, or Galleria Park Hotel.

San Francisco Marriott. Probably not for $100, but its a great hotel with great views. Very close to Union Square and trolleys. It is beautiful every where in that hotel. If you can't afford it, go up to the bar on the top for some nice appetizers and priceless views.

The hippest hotel is probably the Clift Hotel, but it's quite expensive. You won't find anything in San Francisco for less than about $250 per night. If you want to spend only $100 per night, you'll need to get a motel in the surrounding areas.

the chancellor hotel is in union square, it's a great hotel! not quite under $100 a night unless you can get a great deal somewhere (maybe try e-mailing them directly) but i've seen it range from $125-160 a night depending on the season.

even as it isn't a real 5* inn, you could stay at InterContinental San Francisco or the Fairmont at Ghirardelli sq.. when you're vacationing on the weekends, perchance Mandarin Oriental would properly be an outstanding selection for you besides. all of them are in Downtown San Francisco...positioned fairly very genuinely. perfect desires,

Good luck. $100 is bare bones. I like "The W" myself, but it's expensive ($300+ per night).
Look on one of the travel sites. Expedia, Hotwire, Hotels.com
