I am unmarried and earned less than $5000 in 2006, but social security and taxes weren't taken out of my pay check, do I still have to file a return?

If taxes weren't taken out of your check you must have worked "under the table." Anytime you are a new hire you will fill out a W-4 giving them the necessary information to withdraw federal and state taxes from your paycheck. If you never filled out a W-4 then I would say that no, you don't have to file taxes, but you may want to check with your local H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt tax preperation office.

Because your income was less than $5000, you do not have to file. As a single individual your total wages would have to be $8,450 in order to file, if you didn't have taxes withheld. If taxes, such as (state and federal)were withheld, then I would say yes file to get those withholding back.

If you worked and received compensation, you should FILE your tax return, even if your calculated tax is zero.

Yes if you worked you have to file taxes. unless they dont report it. If you dont report it and they do then you can end up with fines and jail time.
