well, for heavy ROCK, i'd say you should check out Coheed and Cambria...really unique and talented, and a gateway into the more experimental....check out "Welcome Home" and their cover of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper"...for the metal end of things, you can't go wrong with Mastodon, particularly the songs "Blood and Thunder," "Wolf is Loose," and "Crystal Skull."
