I have heard many different opinions on this. I have a plain heat lamp on one end of my cage for my gecko and Ieave it on 24/7. He has a "cave" he can hide underneath if he wants darkness.
I am thinking of getting an under the tank heater because the light being on at night affects my sleep. Do I need to just use that and not the light? I've heard they need UV rays on them sometimes. Should I just alternate and use the heating pad only at night?

Two are better than one. The best setup is a heatlamp and a heating pad on the same side of the terrerium. The heatlamp is on during the day and the heating pad stays on 24 hours.

You can get ceramic heat lamps which just emit heat (great for focussing on a basking spot, like a branch) and no light. I have one of these and an underfloor heat pad too, upon which is a shelter, down one end of the vivarium, so there is a cooler zone (in which is the damp shedding box and another shelter).

Because they are nocturnal and feed at night, I believe they really do need a dark period during the day to mimic their natural environment.

Good luck !

You'll want an UTH (under tank heater) on 24/7. Your leo likes complete darkness at night and no bright lights on during the day. I would just get rid of the heat lamp. They do not need a UVB light (ultraviolet rays). They're nocturnal lizards. Feel free to message me with anymore questions

mine only has a heat light turned off at night is fine and healthy for 7 yrs try a red bulb if you want to keep light on 24/7 no uva or b they are nocturnal they do need darkness it hurts there eyes to have light all the time and affects their hunting ability they see great in the dark so the insects are at a disadvantage with the light always on the insects have better chance of not getting caught

We bought a leopard gecko for our son from a breeder, and the first thing he mentioned was that the gecko likes light/dark periods, and the best way to do that was an under tank heater.

We've had him for several months now, and he seems very healthy....and the lights don't keep my son up all night!

Good luck with your gecko!
