It passed the House but the Senate rejected it because it did not contain tax breaks for the small business who employee minimum wage employees. They would stand to not just have to pay the higher wage, but also the higher taxes commensurate with that wage.

The Senate wants tax breaks that will be lifted in stages to keep the increases from strangling small companies. The measure isn't dead though, it will be forwarded to a reconciliation committee to try to work out the problems.

(The cynic in me is adding that at the reconciliation table they will be able to add pork unrelated to the bill. They couldn't add it to the original version because the whole country was watching and reading every word.)

Yes it was not passed in the senate due to teh fact that it did not contain tax breaks for the businesses that would have to pay the increased wages.

i thought it passed, i was watching the news and it said in a couple months the wage will be raised to $6.20 and next january they'll be $7.25! that made my day. dont tell me they didnt stay with it.
