Those overtly or implicitly seeking the GOP nomination are:

Sen. John McCain (the front-runner, but only 'til he self-destructs over supporting more troops for Iraq)***

Fmr. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani (huge Blue Voter crossover appeal, but impossible to imagine getting nomination: messy divorce + pro-gay rights + pro-choice = never could get support from Christian Fundamentalist wing of party)

Fmr. Gov. Mitt Romney (has crossover appeal but the flipflop problem--rightwing governor of a leftwing state, has been on both sides of numerous issues, and Protestant extremists in party may not like his Mormon religious convictions)***

Sen. Sam Brownback (probably the far-right Christian wacko vote's favorite, but has Iraq baggage and may scare away voters from non-Bible Belt states; may suffer from the declining influence nationally of the Christian Right, which has a lot of power inside the party but is on the ropes with the electorate as a whole)

Sen. Chuck Hagel (not to be counted out--building a reputation as one who will challenge Pres. Bush on Iraq, which could be important later on; Republicans may find themselves in a race to distance themselves from this war soon, and he has a head start)

Fmr. Rep. Newt Gingrich (like Al Gore for the Dems, he's waiting in the wings, wisely out of office during recent fiascos re Iraq & corruption & inefficiency, and he might come in like a white knight for the GOP, particularly after McCain self-destructs)

Fmr. Gov/HHS Secy Tommy Thompson (too tied to Bush; not very presidential, but you never know...)***

Fmr. Gov. James Gilmore III (part of the Virginia GOP machine, which is either a plus or a minus, hard to say these days; strong record on civil disaster/national security issues; almost no national recognition; probably the least handsome of the major candidates--definitely a dark horse)***

***=actually announced

Duncan Hunter from california is the only one I know of that has made it official that he's running. He will have my vote because he's probably the only actual conservative running for the GOP. He tries to emulate Ronald Reagan and thats something this country could really use.

Hey. There's a difference between asking an opinion and asking people to do your research work for free.
