On the 96 and newer 4.3(and a few older than 96) the cylinder number in on the distributor cap. Should be numbers 1,3, and 5 on the drivers side and 2, 4, and 6 on the passenger side, coil probably hooks up on this side too. Cylinder #1 is the cylinder closest to the radiator on the drivers side and #2 is the closest to the radiator on the passenger side
Numbers would be like this standing at the radiator looking towards drivers compartment

6 5
4 3
2 1

your question is not very clear. if you are installing a new distributor, set the motor to number 1 tdc, and when you put the dist in your number 1 terminal will be the one that the rotor is pointing to at that time. they dont only work one way. any of the six can be the number 1 as long as the wiring harnes or vacuum lines will still reach. the number 1 is the right front cylinder facing the engine. if you are changing the spark plug wires and need to know where to put them back on the cap, but you didnt lable them before you took them off, then pull out the number 1 spark plug and turn the engine over with a socket on the crank pully nut until you feel air being pushed out of the spark plug hole. make sure you are turning it the right way, have someone else bump the key to see which way the motor turns and use your socket to turn it the same direction. when you start to feel air come out of the plug hole, that means the piston is on its way up, compressing the air, and when it gets to the top, it will need a spark. slowly keep turning the socket while sticking a drinking straw or other soft non metallic object down the hole. when the straw stops going up, or if your timing mark on the crank reads 0
that means you are at tdc. pull off the distributor cap and see where the rotor contact is pointing. that is your number 1 terminal. the firing order on a 350 v8 is 18436572 cw. the 4.3 is a 350 with 2 cyl. chopped off, but i dont know the rotation, or firing order off the top of my head. when you find out just continue plugging the wires in , in order around the cap in the correct direction and she should fire up.

The fireing order facing the fan is: Right bank in front. 1-3-5. Left bank starting at the front. 2-4-6 The rotor placement at TDC. points to the # 1 cylinder wire on the distributor cap, the rotor pointer is now slightly to the right while standing in front.
