The versatile Violin.
Because it evokes a passion, a loneliness, a sensitivity, a creepiness, and an exuberance that no other instrument can come close to. It whispers, screams, cajoles, wails, laments, exults, destroys, and frolics, sometimes all in the same song. It can make a caressing sound like the sweetest lullabye your mother sings when you are small and frightened by a thunderstorm, or the gut-shot noise of someone boiling a cat.
The lone violin from the soundtrack to the Sherlock Holmes Mysteries is just about the most mysterious, sexy, dangerous, eerie and yet thoroughly Victorian sound on the planet. That same instrument is capable of such celebratory cacophony in Irish fiddle music that one feels compelled to throw off one's inhibitions with reckless abandon and dance a jig. I've heard it in rock music in the works of Gabriel, Anderson, and others, and it never seems out of place in sounds as diverse as a middle-eastern dance, a hillbilly jamboree, or a concerto in Vienna.
And, of course, what instrument does the devil play second best, when he goes down to Georgia, lookin' for a soul to steal?
If I were remotely musically inclined, this is the instrument I would choose to speak with: one that clenches your soul in a vice grip made of rabbit fur.

The piano is a crucial instrument in Western classical music, jazz, film, television, and most other complex western musical genres. Since a large number of composers are proficient pianists--and because the piano keyboard offers an easy means of complex melodic and harmonic interplay--the piano is often used as a tool for composition.
