XP Home is upgrade install from WIN98SE. Several user accounts were created, and initially (4-6 weeks) all could access the internet. Now only the guest account can do so, which makes updating windows etc a real pain. Internet access is via broaband D-Link G604T router, and MS IE6.1. Other computers can use the router/modem without problems.
What have I done wrong, and/or would a "clean" install of XP be recommended?

i would login to the administrator account and do some cleaning. scan for viruses and the like. it doesn't have anything to do with your actual internet connection. it sounds like your computer is having problems. if virus scanning doesn't help, then yes you might want to reformat your computer. make sure you copy and programs/files you will need first. good luck!

We have only ever had XP home, we have three named accounts on the computer, we can have different contents in each account.
If you had more than one account previously, I can't assume what would happen when you installed XP home, but as it worked okay at first, clearly something has gone wrong.
Windows can update entire computer from any of the three sites.
Sorry I can't help further, just telling you how it should be.

Sounds like one of the guest accounts has been nominated as the main account.

Ask the guest to sign on and see if they can get into the USER ACCOUNTS in CONTROL PANEL and change back to whoever you want to nominate as the main account.

Otherwise I don't think you have a lot to worry about. Maybe someone was "fiddling" with some of the control info and clicked on the user accounts details and didn't want to tell you in case you found out.

Seems you have found out now!!!!
