i'm not really sure, my mom explained only that it meant the 2nd full moon in a month, since she used the phrase a lot. I think I read, or was told, that it came from American Indian folklore/tradition, but I don't know why they called it a blue moon. But they often used colors for things, which explains Blue Star highway and Red Arrrow road in my neck of the woods.

Well, there's the definition of a blue moon (it's not so common, so that's why we say "once in a blue moon") and where I have heard it originated, but I don't know why the specific color was chosen. I don't think stars are blue either. What do others think about it's explanation and origins??

It is a very rare event, but we do get a blue moon . I don't remember what happens to when we do, but it doesn't happen very often.
