The attack on pearl harbor was in 1941 but the war started in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. The USA just entered the war in 1941.

WWII did not begin on 12/07/1941. It began in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is the incident that motivated the USA to declare war on Japan and by default Germany. Japan was a German allay so by declaring war on Japan the USA was declaring war on Germany as well.

World War II did not begin with the bombing of Pearl Harbor which was in 1941, that only marked the year that the US got involved. World War II began in 1939 with the German invasion of Poland and ended in 1945 after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with the first atomic bombs ever used for bellicose reasons.

I'm sure the Poles, Norwegians, Dutch, Belgians, French and British, not to mention the Germans and Italians would be surprised to learn that World War 2 began with Pearl Harbour!
