6 are on the Ice for each team at a time (one goaltender, 3 forwards, 2 defenseman). There can be less because of penalties, but never less than 4.

A team dresses 20 players, 18 "skaters" and 2 goaltenders.

Usually ALL 18 skaters play at some point. Skaters tire quickly and are usually replaced within 2 minutes from when their shift starts. Even the star players don't normally play more than 30 of the 60 minutes. Most teams have 4 forward "lines" and 3 defensive pairs.

5 players, and 1 goalie on each side which make a total of 12 players at a time...unles there is a penalty or a pulled goalie....
