Because the corporations, special interest grpoups and lobbyists donate to the candidates, PACS, 527s and national party committees in huge quantities. The representatives fail to represent the constituents because they are forced to follow the party line and pay back their contributors.
In the world of politics contributors are more valuable than constituents. Besides when only 40% of the population votes, and 80% of the vote is along predetermined partylines there is a statistically small percentage of undecided voteres to worry about angering.

Because there lobbyists put a lot of money into their pockets. Politics is just like any other business, its really all about profits. Lobbyist and interests group pay big money to make sure their best interest are looked after and Representatives are all looking to cash in. I shouldnt say all but a lot of them have their hand out and are looking to get paid. Nothing is free.

Lobbyists and Interest groups are made up of their constituents. Plus, the idea behind these groups is that they represent a significant portion of the constituency, thus, by listening to them our elected officials ARE listening to us. At least, that is the theory. In reality, they listen so they get stuff for free...

Because the bottom line in politics today, is money. It is money that gets you into office, and money that keeps your there. To put it bluntly, the lobbyists and special interests groups bring a lot more to the table than us humble constituents. I had hoped, with all the talk of campaign finance reform, that this would change. But sadly, the bills that were approved were little more than smoke and mirrors with the end result that nothing has changed.

If they want to pay for any thing then they go to lobbyists. They get perks based on each one.

they (lobbyiest) buy them (congressmen and women) dinner, gifts, take them golf, fishing, hunting, exotic places, and then get them a hooker (in news recently). and many other things while we civilian just nag nag nag and tell them that they are not doing the job (which is true). So if you were them (congress) who would likely go to bed with after a day? (nagging wife (us) or beautiful girlfriend (lobbyiest) that caters to your need at everymoment and time).
