I recieved a three year caution 8 years ago but have not re-offended or being in trouble with the police. will this show up when there is a background check on me from an external organisation.
it was said to me that the file will be destroyed after three years.

It shouldn't count as a conviction because I assume the charges were dropped after you completed the term of your court supervision, but the arrest will still show on your record unless you can get it expunged...you'll need a lawyer for that, but it's a relatively simple procedure if the DA doesn't oppose it and shouldn't cost too much.
