how much influence over our daily lives does the moon really have?

Well on coastal region it does have a significant effect because of the tides. The tides are also commercially beneficial as fishermen don't have to go into deep seas to catch the fish.
In some areas, especially developing countries, where there is scarcity of electricity people rely on moon light at night. Many animals like tigers and lions venture out in the night to kill their prey taking advantage of the moon light.Other than that it doesn't have much effect on normal people.
But then it depends - The moon means a lot to two lovers strolling along the night beach under the full moon!

I'm definitely not a follower of astrology, but the moon affects the tides, and a woman's menstrual cycle roughly corresponds to the moon, and people really do act kind of weird during full moons sometimes, so I'd say there's an effect, but not huge, nothing that can't be overriden by conscious thought.
