Unlocked basically is a GSM phone (most popular standard for global use of phones) and has been programmed to take off the lock from a specific carrier (e.g. GSM supported network carriers in US: Cingular and T-Mobile. Both carriers operate at frequency bands of 1900Mhz but some areas, I've heard in the southern regions, for Cingular only operate at 850Mhz) or a phone that is unbranded and SIM free. Just pop out ur SIM from ur old phone and switch it to another GSM unlocked phone and ur ready to go. Normally, unlocked phones, once a SIM card is put in place, shows the carrier's name on the phone display. Be careful when travelling out of the country. You might want to use a different SIM card from the local carriers in order to avoid roaming charges when used with your country's SIM card. Most services will still be available like internet, SMS and MMS, e-mail and all the other goodies with an unlocked phone using ur current carrier. As for the website where you can get these GSM phones nicely priced, you might wanna try www.exoticphone.com or eBay. MobileBee.com offers free shipping, I think, so you might wanna consider that too. Cingular phones offer good phones but the range of phones are way broader than you think. If you're gonna buy an unlocked, unbranded phone then might as well forget shopping at Cingular. Or if Cingular is your only choice of phones to buy, ask if they have Unbranded/Unlocked phones available. They're usually selling these phones in retail price so why bother. Get the best out of your buck. Remember, only Cingular and T-Mobile use GSM Networks in USA.

look online for cingular phones. unlocked means they were meant for other service providers like tmobile but can now be used with any service provider. downside to that is you can't use all the features expecially those that are strictly for the service provider like internet service.
