No, we do not need "special protection." We just need EQUAL RIGHTS.
We should be able to marry the person we love, since marriage rights are given by the STATE. Anything else is discrimination.
We should be able to prosecute people like Mr. "Lulu" for hate crimes, evidence of which is hate speech, which has been shown to foment anti-LGBT violence.
Quite simply, we need to be treated as any other US citizen, with the same rights. There's nothing "special" about that - it is called justice and equality.

We need to be treated equally in all areas and have the same rights as heterosexuals have. We do not have the same rights and protections in the areas of insurance, health care, end of life issues, Social Security, etc. My partner and I have to address these and other issues through our wills and other legal documents and HOPE that our wishes will be honored. Straight people don't have to worry about these areas unless they are not married. At least they have the OPTION of marriage, however, no one should be forced to. Some issues such as Social Security for the surviving partner of a deceased individual simply does not exist. Equal rights make the playing field level. Yes, gays and lesbians need equal rights.

Absolutely not. What is needed is equal application of the law to all citizens of the U.S., regardless of gender, skin color, religion, country of origin, or, within limits, sexual preference. The limits on sexual preferences are a necessity. Mutually enjoyable activities between consenting adults in the privacy of their own home are nobodies business but their own. To violate any of those conditions is to infringe on another person's rights, which cannot be allowed.

Because we're being persecuted for our sexual preference. I can't even walk around my home town without having to look over my shoulder for fear of falling victim of a hate crime. I choose to damage my kidneys and bladder because it's safer than using public restrooms because I'm genderqueer.
