An example would be an actor who played a role unusually magnificently and would be hard put to repeat the performance in his next role, but would be judged by that standard. Ditto an author of a wonderfully excellent novel. He might never be able to come up with another novel that would reach that standard. So he will have trouble putting out a good, rather than excellent, novel, since his readership would be dissatisfied when comparing it to the excellent one.

It means the person (or it.... organization) did very well on an endeavor in the past. Unfortunatley they were unable to carry that success and continue doing well & many times ultimatley failing.

To me it means that now he/she/it will be held up to a higher set of standards now. In order to be seen as a success now, they will have to not only maintain the prior level...but exceed it.
Kind of like the auto companies. It's not enough to just make a profit, the profit has to continually exceed the prior year's profit (for the shareholders to stay happy). And now look at the trouble its in.

If you've done well in the past people come to expect nothing less of you and may be dissappointed if you fail to come up with results constantly.
