Why has Microsoft decided to stay on the NASDAQ and not switch over to the NYSE like most companies do. Aren't the commission fees a bit higher on the NASDAQ.

Actually I believe the listing fees are higher on the NYSE. That is what the companies pay for the "right" to be traded on the NYSE. In most cases there is no difference in the commission a broker charges for stock trades on the NYSE or NASDAQ.

Microsoft is a tech company and they believe in the power of technology. The NASDAQ embodies this where the NYSE is old school with it auction format - although they have been embracing more technology recently.

The NYSE has a standing invitation for Microsoft though. They would love to have them on the NYSE. They have even reserved the letter M as a ticker symbol for them. A single letter symbol is highly coveted in the industry.

They had the opportunity a few years back to be included in the 30 DOW Jones companies on the NYSE and elected to stay on the NASDAQ. NASDAQ is known for technology based companies while NYSE is more "old growth", maybe that's why they chose to stay on the NASDAQ.

remember Microsoft is part of the group of companies who sees themselves as the non-traditional type companies. So NASDAQ is always seen as for non-traditional type companies.
