a fender stratocaster is the most versitile guitar on the planet! it will do anything you're into.....or if you are only into one thing, itll do that! gibson always sound like a gibson no matter what! listen to slash, frampton, angus, etc...all their guitars sound the same! listen to SRV, hendrix, malmsteen, clapton...all sound different!

It really depends on what sort of tone you are looking for.
Want a guitar that can sound like Jimmy Hendrix...get a Fender Strat.
Want to sound like Slash then go with the Gibson Les Paul.

That being said, Gibson quality has been sucking lately and their guitars are way overpriced for what you are getting. Go with a nice vintage used Gibson and you'll be happier.

Fenders are good depending on where they were made. Pass on the Chinese and Korean Fenders. The Mexican Fenders are actually great quality guitars, the only thing they lack is a bit lower quality electronices. The American Fenders are hit and miss as the quality out of their American factory is spotty sometimes, but they have the best quality materials. My fave is the Japanese Fenders but these are harder to find, there are websites that sell only the Japanese Fenders though. These are similar in materials to an American Fender but the build quality is better.

It would depend on what kind of music you are leaning to. Also how big you are and how long are your fingers. Fender is a lighter guitar. The better ones are made in America. The other's are ok. The Gibsons are heavier. Now that is in electrics. If you are talking about accoustic, get Fender first, because of price. If price is no object get the Gibson and try a Martin.

personally I like a fender stratocaster because of the contour of the body and the lighter weight.

It really is a matter of taste and this debate has been going on since Leo Fender and Les Paul both started to make guitars. Each one has their own unique qualities, ie..a Strat is lighter than a Les Paul, but a Les Paul has much beter mid tone qualities.

In the end you need to go to several different music stores and try each one out. Try ones that are in and above your price range and see which one gives you what you are looking for. You may find that a Jackson DK2 fits better or an Ibanez or a BC Rich. Try them all.

I'm going to compare the two one at time.
Gibson's have wider necks (it's called Nut Width in measurements). So if you have "fat" fingers, a big palm, for pretty long fingers, it'll be fine. They offer two fretboard woods, rosewood and ebony. Ebony is a harder wood, and many pro's prefer it for string bends. Gibson's use Humbucking pickups which are associated with some blues (B.B. King) and hard rock (Led Zeppeling, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Guns N' Roses, and Clapton used one until his Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album). Humbuckers have a "creamy" or "mellow" sound when clean. Gibsons are typically more expensive. They range from $1,000 to 5,000 usually (depends on model).
Fenders have slimmer necks. The widest necks they offer are 1mm thinner than Gibson's typical width (it does make a difference). The two fretboard woods they offer are rosewood and maple. Maple is the harder wood and is preferred for the same reasons as ebony would (Hendrix and Clapton both use/used maple). The necks come in two shapes. C-shaped and V-shaped (preference of your palm). The statocasters (which I'm assuming is what you're interested in) have 3 single coil pickups that don't have as much of a distinct sound as humbuckers, but they offer different pickup combinations (5 on most, but now some have 7). Stratocasters are used often in blues rock and can produce a twangy sound if wanted. Hendrix, Clapton, George Harrison, David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd), and John Mayer used/use Strats. The American models range from $1000-$1300 (depends).
Both Gibson and Fender have overseas models based on their own models. Gibson has Epiphone. Fender has Squier. They're cheaper models offering cheaper quality, but good for beginners.
I prefer Gibsons.

Fender and Gibson are cheaply made guitars that cost a alot. Jackson is owned by Fender so they are now made out of cheap materials. So anymore, I would say if you want a guitar made out of decent wood and is not laminated veneer, then go with an older Ibanez or an older BC Rich. Otherwise, buying a Fender or a Gibson will cost you alot of money and it will be made out of particle board or plywood. It's up to you.

Don't limit yourself to choosing between Gibson and Fender. choose which guitar you think fits you best...personally I like Fenders better than Gibsons..Gibsons are just to "Jimmy Page"-ish for me, where fenders are more versitile. They are obviously great Blues guitars, with artists from Robert Cray to John Mayer using them...but also look at Yngwie Malmsteen, also works well for him. But really check out brands like PRS, I like them a great deal more than Fenders

I have a Les, and a few friends of mine have Fenders. I have to say that they are both equally good for the face-melting solos, but if you want a better blues-y guitar, go for the Les. If you are all about metal and things like that, then go for the Fender. But if you are interested in all music, make it a stretch and go for an Ibanez. The cost range is lower for most Ibanez models, too.

My answer (suggestion):
Try different models by both companies BUT use the same amp (or, if you can bring your own amp, use it).
Focus on these two things:
A. the feel of the neck;
B. the response from the pickups.

Forget about body style or brand name.
its about the comfort of your hand and the sound you want to create.

Why?
Both Gibson and Fender make very good instruments.
I own Fenders' Telecaster (USA) and Strat (Korea) with maple necks as well as Gibsons' "The Paul" and ES-335 (both USA made with rosewood necks).

To me, each offers its own unique feel and sound.
And I use each for different styles of music because of the different intonations.

I love the twang of the Tele (good for blues and country/rock).
The Strat is great for rock.
But "The Paul" has some kick-*** pickups and is LOUD.
And the ES-335 is such a smooth sound plus I can draw out some good sustain/feedback because of its hollow body.

Good luck and happy playing!

Well, Gibson is definately the better quality and popularity w/ the stars, however fender has more bang for the buck. I wouldnt trade my strat for anything, and fender has really nice acoustics. Im going w/ fender.
