Two possible reasons:

1. That's just the way life happened to evolve on this planet through random mutations.

2. God made it that way.

If it is 2 let me say perhaps His reason for this is to keep animals motivated with purpose, goals, and directives: figure out how we are gonna eat this day keeps animals or people active and thinking all the time. Without worrying about how we're gonna eat we wouldn't really do much in our lives.

All known life forms (animals and plants) expend energy through out the course of their life. This energy can be measured in the form of calories. Since there is no such thing as a self-sustaining life form, additional energy is needed to replenish the energy that has been expended. If, not, the life form would die.

No you could hook yourself up to an ivy and take fluids and nutrients in that way. However, that does not seem like such an appealing way go about your daily life.

Eating does the same job.

Because if an animal does not eat, they will not get the nutrients they need to survive and the body would not be able to function. It is like anything else, you need to have fuel for anything to run. The same rule applies for animals.

hunger is a primary drive from birth, and so if an animal were to go hungry then naturally it would want to eat. not to mention that if they didnt eat they wouldnt be able to get nutrients needed as most animals produce i think about 12 of the 20 essential amino acids, which can only be found from...food! so if they didnt get the nutrients needed they would die!

Only plants can make their own food from sunlight. Animals lack the ability to turn sunlight into chemical energy, so we need to get carbohydrates from plants, or from animals that have eaten plants.
