The French are a law unto themselves and cherry pick those European laws which they like and discard all the rest.

Opposition to Turkish entry into the EU is widespread on mainland Europe. Here in UK most political parties and the government support Turkish entry.

As far as I am concerned, Turkey is very much a part of Europe and was of considerable importance during the Roman Empire period, when it was most certainly seen as part of Europe and of the Roman Empire. There is plenty of evidence in Turkey to support this.

In my own personal view Turkey and the Turkish people should be rewarded for their loyal support and continued membership of NATO. In the dark days of the cold war, it was Turkey on the front line and not UK.

We're all in this together and if there are any problems about Turkish membership of the EU then these need to be ironed out as soon as possible.

I have a lot of time for the French - they remain as one of the last bastions of civilisation in Europe, and their regional cooking is first class (I'm a chef), but their geo-political nous baffles me.

Turkey has been a friend of the West and a stalwart of NATO for decades, whereas the French remain dilatory in their commitment to European security.

Al I can say, from a security point of view, is that I'd choose the Turks any time. And Turkish grub isn't bad, either.

French politics are very nationalist. They are not ashamed to act in what they perceive as their own interest. They protect what they consider their strength as a culture. The Muslim invasions into Europe were devastating; they do not want to give any advantage to the rise in Muslim militant power nor do they want French culture diluted any further by any non-French influence.

Probably because they're rascist and/or religionist....and becasue they want to stir the political pot within the EU by supporting the Greeks who want northern Cyprus back........and because they're scared that Turkey will deprive them of their farming subsidies simply by joining because the subsidy pot gets smaller......pick any combination of reasons. Not that Turkey has covered itself in glory of course.....
