He enjoys adventure games like Zelda and online games like Runescape. I'm trying to find something interesting, fun and challenging, but not so filled with violence.

If you dig around, you can find many appropriate PC games. One that immediately comes to mind is Sid Meier's Railroads!, which is basically the digital equivalent to a toy trainset. The challenge comes in creating your own railroads, delivering goods, and competing with other companies. I played games like this when I was around 9 or 10, and it wasn't over my head.

Since you mentioned Zelda, then I assume you own a Nintendo-type platform. All of Nintendo's main franchises - aside from Metroid - are kid-friendly. Pokemon, Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, etc.

Brain Age or Big Brain Academy. Animal Crossing Wild World or New Super Mario Bros. These games are really fun to play.

Best to get car race games. Its not violent but might influence him to speed in mature age.

How about taking him and introduce outdoors. They are good and real part of life. They do not have fake charactes.

Video and computer games only good for half an hour. After that length of time, you are training your child to do nothing with his life but sit on the cough and play games. Well, you might regret this when he is a teenager. He might not listen to anything you say, because he becomes to attached to those games. On the other hand, he is you child and can steer his life which ever valley you choose for him.

Nintendo's Yoshi! I have a 3 1/2 year old son that is playing it. it's not violent at all and it's made for all ages. Even i play it with my son sometimes. No violence and best of all, it's a older game (not that old though) so you wont be having to fork out big money for it! Good luck....

Go for Kingdom Hearts. It's a little violent but not bad, you just swing a sword and the things disappear. It has Disney characters in it too. Once and only after he beats the first on should you get the second Kingdom Hearts. He'll be confused otherwise.

Harvest Moon is a good series, and their GameBoy/Nintendo DS titles are very good in perticular. The basis for gameplay is running around trying to run a farm successfully, taking care of your dog and horse while raising crops, chickens, sheep, etc. and interacting with the people in your town.
Spyro is good, but it is still violence even if it's a cartoon dragon blasting cute monsters with fire breath.

I've heard good things about the new Spyro games that's out but I'm not sure how challenging. Sports games are good too like NBA 07 or Madden 07.
