I always tell people...if there are a lot of people around I either whisper or look up and down at the zipper to get the persons attention

Tell them.
If I have something in my teeth, it's pretty much the same thing- wondering how long its been there or been that way. I'd rather be embarrassed about it in front of one person than go on for hours without having a clue in the world.
On a side note, you should probably look away when you tell them though, or at least when they're zipping. For modesty's sake. ;-)

I would tell the person. I would want someone to tell me if my zipper was down.

Absolutely tell them! Pull them aside privately and just whisper that they need to zip up. The same goes for something in their hair or teeth, toilet paper on their shoe, a smudge on their face, etc. It's the courteous thing to do and they'll be glad you saved them from further embarrassment. :-)

If I know them I will tell them but if they are a complete stranger I I would look away. I would not want them to question as to why I was looking!

tell them, discretely. Like stare straight at them until you get attention, then drift your sight to his zipper.
