Maybe because you are from an affluent family you have had more opportunities and role models than some Hispanics who have not been as blessed as you. Second of all having an accent does not make you any less educated as you are implying. If a Latin person's first language is Spanish it is likely that they will have an accent. What do you suggest they do? Speak with a phony accent in order to be accepted by ignorant people like yourself? I know of many intelligent, successful, and professional Latinos who have a Spanish accent and are proud of their heritage. By getting on Yahoo and insulting your race you are propagating the same stereotypes that people will use to judge you at first sight. Instead of criticizing your people you should try setting a positive example for those who are not as "enlightened" as you are. Volunteer your time at some youth organizations in the Hispanic neighborhoods and show the Latin youth that they can strive to do better. There are mentor organizations like big brother and big sister, there is the YMCA, contact an elementary school with a large Latin population...
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

That isn't true. Your people aren't trying to remain in any stereotype. whats really happening is you are buying into a stereotype that you know doesn't apply. And just because a Hispanic makes tortillas does that make them wrong? That's like saying an Asian person shouldn't eat rice because its a stereotype or black people shouldn't eat chicken. don't buy into the ignorance of others. There will always be people in every culture or race who fit a certain stereotype but that does not mean the majority do.

I'm first generation Irish(born here, both parents born there)- you're,as you say, educated and affluent- it's typical first gen for any group- look at us Irish- the smart ones get to go to law school and ultimately become corrupt Boston politicians, and the rest get union cards, drink and fight each other. The process is called assimilation- and it starts at the top- it's not necessarily degrading or embarassing, just how it is. But going back in the family tree, my uncles/aunts and greats, etc(my family's been coming over to Boston and NYC for four generations now)-there's a lot more union cards than law degrees- but all of the law degrees have fathers and uncles with union cards.

I'm hispanic too. The thing here is it sounds like you're buying into a stereotype against your own people. Don't let it bother you because there's nothing you can do about it. Many races have the issue of remaining in a stereotype, not just latinos.

this is probably the most ignorant and racist babble I've read in quit a while, you've been blessed with "affluence" use it to get a real education, not community college educated or destined as I would expect from reading this dribble and try to better mankind and make a difference, not continue the cycle- have some integrity and morals before you judge others

We are not the only race that has a breeding problem! I also don't agree with putting down my own for everyone to read about.

I think it's that way with every race, hon. Some people just don't want to move away from the image and better themselves.
Besides, who are we to judge. You're my neighbor in our swanky trailer park. Oh, and by the way, LOVE what you did with the beer can wind chime!

I don't think this has anything to do with your skin colour. the same can be said of what is called "white trash" or their equivalent across countries and cultures.
