in the nhl games they break up fights within 5 seconds. the ahl has some pretty good ones, they used to not even break them up until someone hurt someone else, and still get a penalty.. new rules?

With the new NHL there are fewer pure fighters around. The days of the enforcer protecting the marquis players is gone with the advent of the instigator rule. The salary cap has also forced teams that want to be competitive to only sign players that can contribute other than just strictly fighting.
Most of the fights I have seen in the last few years are bear hugs where the players feel each other out for the 1st minute, land 1 or 2 punches each and the linesman then have plenty of opportunity to break it up.
Back in the day can you imagine being a linesman and being told to break up Domi vs. Probert. I don't think so. Guys like this would throw one haymaker after another and if a linesman stepped in he'd be laying in a pool of his own blood.
I think it has more to do with the fact that there is more opportunity for linesmen to step in and stop it. I don't agree the league wants to have less of it because even though fighting is not allowed it is what most fans want.

The refs break up the fights way too soon! I haven't seen a really good fight in the NHL in a long time! I say let them go on for at least 2 - 3 minutes!

Though the NHL's new rules isnt geared as much to fighting as it once was. There is still a chance for a fight when more than 1 fight occurs the refs usally will only break up one while the other one progresses

NHL is a nationally televised sport. AHL isn't. NHL is trying to make the sport seem like its not violent by cutting out the fighting. AHL doesn't get much TV coverage at all so it really doesn't matter.

It all depends on when the linesmen can get in. They look for a break and get in there. I love the fighting and hope they don't ban it lol but on the same note if I saw two people going at it and saw a break to move in and separate them I probably would also.

I think it would be even funnier if they linesmen said screw this and made the refs step in and separate the fighters.

I don't think they break them up fast enough. Doesn't it look stupid when two guys drop the gloves and stand there for thirty seconds before goin for it, and the referees just twiddle their thumbs and watch. Those fights should be broken up before they even start. Most of the time the players aren't even mad at each other, it's just "i'm the tough guy on my team and you're the tough guy on your team so we need to fight." It looks stupid and it wastes time.

If two guys actually want to fight, just grab on and do it and get it over with!! i hate it when they dance around forever beforehand wasting time

if you want to watch fights go see boxing.

I think Battman wanted to be high scoring , low on violance so the ref will get in between to stop a fight.every now and then they will let players fight until one of them goes down (like the case of Shanahan vs Brashear.)
