It really depends what type of online business it is. Sure, there are many legitimate online businesses, then there are pyramid scams and other things where all you have to do is deliver them valid email addresses (eg by logging onto discussion forums) which they can spam. Most of the in-your-face "earn money online" ads etc are exactly that. Most legitimate online businesses let you apply to them just like normal businesses, rather than actually advertising...

To research an online business, a good first step would be http://www.dnsstuff.com/ scroll down to "domain name tests" on the left and use the WHOIS lookup tool, it will give you information on who registered the website's domain and when, including their name, contact info and address and who hosts the domain. Then you can proceed to google, yahoo or the search engine of your choice to find out more. Yellow pages might also help once you have a name or company name...

Oh, and don't use Paul's Moneyreviewsite!!! I checked it out and McAfee Site-adviser said at least one of the sites it links to makes "MISLEADING WORK-FROM-HOME" offers...

Mcafee siteadviser can be found here http://www.siteadvisor.com
It is a small free extension for your browser which warns you of bad websites....

And as others have said, the golden rule is always: If they want YOUR money first, it's not worth the risk. Don't sign up!

Seems like most of the people who answered are only on Yahoo Answers just to work for these websites by promoting them...I wouldn't trust them, because they get paid for it so of course they would say "hey check out this great site it made me soooo much money..." No matter if it really works or not.

I've never done an online job if they require me to pay them first. That's crap. The only online things I've done are where you can answer surveys and they'll send you a check in the mail (I won't give out my bank account or anything. If that's even an option I won't use that company).

I guess the only way to know for sure if they are legitimate would be to make sure you don't need to pay them any money. That pay me money so I can show you how to make money is all a scam. With the company I use, I don't make a lot of money (maybe only $20 or so a month) but it's easy and I don't expect any quick rich schemes to ever work.

If you'd like to try the company I use, follow this link.

I believe that any company that asks for upfront or initial payment/deposit for work at home jobs is likely to be a scam. There are a few legitimate companies who don't ask you for any kind of advance fee for offering you a work from home job.If you are interested in a home based job, many companies like LiveOps,Alpine Access, WorkathomeAgent, employ home based callers to answer phone calls for them.More information at http://www.pcworkathome.net/customerserviceworkfromhome.html

I have found several legitimate work at home sites so far, and one of them made me $494+ in October, $700+ in November, and $838.57 in December. They are free to join.

Please click my screen name or avatar for more information and a link for proof of payment.

And by the way--never join a work at home program that wants you to pay up front. If they were making that much money, they wouldn't need to charge you.

Some do, some don't. I've tried several that don't. You could look at their sales reports over the years. Money paid in should be guaranteed. Profile.

You've got a better chance of getting a paycheck at the end of the week is by getting a real, in person job.
