Well we've all heard that giving birth is extremely painful. But I was wondering if having the second baby is more painful than having the first. Like for example, when you get a shot, it's better be relaxed than to clench your muscles and teeth because then the needle will have a harder time going through you skin (well that's what I've heard). Is it the same in this case? You've already experienced how horribly painful it was the first time, will you spend months dreading the second? Or will the baby come out quicker than the first (I heard that a lot also).

I'm getting some really great answers so far but I just wanted to say that I'm not having a baby! I'm only fourteen! I was just curious. Keep up the great answers.

My friend has had 2 children and she said it was a cake walk the second time. Not only was the pregnancy itself easier (no throwing up or cravings), but the labor was quicker and less painful since she knew what she was going to be dealing with.

The first baby was extremely painful, and the labor lasted 15 hours. I was shocked and surprised by the pain. When the second baby came, I was very relaxed because I knew what to expect. The pain level was about the same, and it took me 15 hours (again), but I would have to say that the second time around was better, only because I knew what to expect.

I didn't feel a thing. But my wife screamed like a race car. Seriously, everybody is different and there are lots of factors (size, weight, etc..). In the end the baby has to come out and you will forget the pain once you see that beautiful little child. Don't be scared then it will hurt more you will tense up and fight against yourself to get the baby out. Yes, it will hurt- if it was easy us men would do it. By the way I'm an OB this is about as honest as I can be. Congrats and Good Luck!!!

It all depends... my Mom had my younger brother (son #2) breach... and Mom said he held a rib too... :-) and it hurt worse...
My wife however had a 32 hour labor with our first child and a 30 hour labor with our second... and by far the second was much better...
My wife thought she was better prepared the second time... and better able to relax early so she still had enough left to push the kid out when it was time to really push...
If you had a hard time the first time I highly recomend hiring a Dula (sp)...
Oh I forgot... first time she had an epidural that only worked on half her body... and some narcotics... second time all natural... and she really thought the second was much easier... the Dula made a world of difference...

They say it is easier the second time usually doesn't take as long to progress in labor with your second. It all depends on the person more then anything. Just relax as hard as it may be and keep yourself focused on something and have someone there to talk to and things should move right along!

I think its different for everyone. I had a friend with her first it took about 3 hours, and she said it wasn't that bad. 5 years later she had another baby and it took like 15 hours, and a lot more pain.

I imagine it is different for everyone, but my second was sooooo much easier than the first. Again every pregnancy is different and i have been told there is no way you can measure with certainty any aspect of pregnancy or birth by past experience because it is so different each time.

I particular wish so i'm due in October with toddler #2 and that i'm scared that it will be yet another lengthy 17 hour exertions with issues like the first. yet, a minimum of a woman receives a tremendous advantages on the end once you get to carry your toddler. sturdy success

No the second baby does not hurt more. Most of the time they come faster. Just relax and let nature take its course. You will be fine.

All of my births were painful...but here's an analogy for you that someone once said to me...Think of your cervix in labor...compare it to putting on a turtleneck sweater for the first time..it fits very tight and is hard to get into...it goes back to its original shape, but never seems quite as hard to get back on again...Sounds weird but makes sense LOL.
