The Wolfgang Press was an English band active throughout the 1980s.
The band consisted of Michael Allen (vocals, bass), Mark Cox (keyboards), and Andrew Gray (guitar). The band recorded for the 4AD Records label. Their debut LP, The Burden Of Mules, was released in 1983. This was followed by the Scarecrow EP, the Water EP, and the Sweatbox EP, all produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins. Subsequent LPs include 1985's The Legendary Wolfgang Press And Other Tall Stories, 1986's Standing Up Straight, 1988's Bird Wood Cage, 1991's Queer and 1995's Funky Little Demons. In 2001, 4AD released a retrospective compilation, Everything Is Beautiful: 1983-1995. The Burden of Mules was released on CD in November 2005, one of the last of 4AD's full-length LPs to be released on the CD format.
Michael Allen is now with the band Geniuser, who released an album Mud Black on the Danish Phisteria label in 2005, Andrew Gray records under the name Limehouse Outlaw and released an album Homegrown on his own label in 2003, and Mark Cox is currently working on music, but as yet, has no name for it.
