I think there must have some regsitry errors and spyware in you PC to slow it down.
You need to try a registry cleaner to clean you PC.
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer you create junk in the registry. You need to scan and clean your PC with registry cleaner. It is a powerful and useful tool to elinimate to the clutter and junk that builds up in your PC's registry from installing and removing programs, creating and deleting files and surfing online.Without regular system tune–ups, it's very likely your computer will slow, crash, full of error messages, leaving you with a costly computer–mechanic bill and lost data./.,.
There are some comparison and review of registry cleaners

Many people will tell you to delete files off your computer, don't worry, that is not needed. Your computer speed is not affected as much by what files you have on your computer, but rather which ones are running without you knowing, and also which programs are starting when windows turns on. Here are a few things you can do.
Firstly, press ctrl, alt, del and go to applications to see what is running. You can terminate any undesires applications running.
Another thing you can do is: go to start, run, and then in the prompt type "msconfig", now click the tab "startup" and make sure you do not have any programs starting up with the computer like kazaa, p2p networking, or other programs that do not need to start up with the computer.
If these things do not work, you can go to system tools, which is found under accessories, you can clean the drives, and defrag the computer.
If none of these work, you may need to run some type of anti-virus program. Beware though, because most freeware when it comes to anti virus programs hurt more than they help. I would recommend if you want something free, to use "avast". You can also pay for the better version of avast. Also you could buy a not so expensive program like spy sweeper that would do the job.
And lastly if none of those work, I would either try to reinstall windows and see where that gets you with a clean factory condition machine. But if that doesnt work im sorry to say you probably do not have a very fast computer. You could call your manufacturer if your desperate and if you have a warranty.

Memory. You probably need more of it. Take your computer to the store where you bought it and tell them you want more memory and while you are at it make sure you upgrade your video card.
If you surf the web allot. You will also need to run adaware and spyware programs to get rid of all the junk that is on your computer. Your best bet there is to backup all your files and reinstall windows.

a murphy's law would sound more like, your computer will crash as soon as you are ready to ask out the hot girl on AIM. all pay pal accounts get hacked as soon as the funds have a usable positive balance. murphy's laws were about being ready for anything to happen, not bitching about your computer to blame your own short commings

It would help if you told us what hardware you have, and if you run spyware regularly. If you are short a particular hardware item, it could explain a lot. An educated answer might help you more than a general one.
