The main thing is not to LET your turtle bite you. Fingers in a turtle's face can prompt a fear or feeding reaction. Best to keep them out of the way. It's been a while since I've been bit by a turtle, I woudn't be too concerned about pain from a little guy, but as they get bigger.........

Yeah, they'll bite....and it depends on how big your turtle is if it'll hurt. One thing you need to consider. Make sure you wash your hands after handling your turtle. In the 1960s, it was the fad in the US for people to have these small turtles.....so almost everyone had them. Then suddenly they had a salmonella outbreak in the US, of almost epidemic proportions.....it was traced back to these turtles....and people simply not washing their hands after handling them. Of course they didn't know that at the time.....but they were educated and the salmonella outbreaks ceased. So please make sure that you or anyone else who handles your turtle will wash their hands when finished, especially before eating anything. Best of luck to you.

Yes, they can bite if you give them a reason... or taste like food.
A baby turtle is a little pinch, an adult can hurt and MAYBE break the skin a little (rarely if ever).
MOST keepers are nipped a couple times, but nothing serious- much less than a kitten or hamster!

when they are still a baby turtle, their bite won't hurt. as they grow larger, their bite can really hurt and could definitely bite a piece of meat out of you, but on the other hand, why would you put your hand or finger into his mouth? that's just silly....

Mine is a four-year old and I can assure you she bit me tonight as I was scrubbing her shell and she wasn't happy. I was surprised and it hurt. The underneath beak is sharp and she took a good chunk out of my middle finger. She also didn't want to let go. I can only blame myself for bad handling technique.
