How about discussing the cost of the war in Iraq?
Calculate what the war cost your state or your community --

There is a great site that will give you the current numbers,
and you can see for each state:

Then take the number and determine what you could buy with that money -- how many new textbooks, or school lunches, or hospital visits.... things like that.

What, exactly, have you been studying lately? Surely you can narrow down the topics a little. If you're on ancient times, it'd be interesting to talk about the role of women.
