In a car that can handle high speeds such as a hot hatch or coupe, even speeds beyond 100mph are easily controllable (given the right conditions). However, people would always drive a bit faster than the limit - or would they?
Essentially, if there was no limit, everyone would drive at a speed that they feel comfortable with. A limit of 80mph is a good speed in which everyone would be comfortable driving.

I believe slow cars are the ones that are dangerous on UK roads than fast ones. Increasing the speed limit will reduce accidents actually (and probably reduce congestion too). I find it ludicrous that after 37 years of motor vehicle technological development some government official still thinks a 1970 car still needs the same distance to stop from 70 mph. Come on, the breaking system is much superior. It's all for police fund raising (or is it fine raising)

I've watched 'The World's Most Dangerous Drivers' on Television and 80% of all the bad drivers come from out there. They should lower the speed limit. Maybe you guys should learn to drive at 60 before you ask to raise the speed limit.

I don't think there should be a speed limit on the motorway at all,but the chances of the speed limit being increased are very small indeed. The faster a vehicle travels the more fuel it burns. With the current situation with fossil fuels it would be a little foolhardy to allow people to use fuel even faster than we already do!I'm a lorry driver and believe me you soon get used to traveling at a steady 56 mph and get to your destination almost as fast.

They keep talking about lowering it round town and increasing it on the motorway.MOST people drive at 80 or 90 on the motorway all the time.Of course they shoul raise it to 80 on the motorway or even 90. But they won't.They say thats burning to much petrol and we all have to be economical nowerdays. As if
That will make a difference.

They are all driving at 80mph now. Seriously though, since the 60s, there are ten times more traffic on our roads and I think we should keep the 70mph as it is. There are still too many accidents at this speed. now..

the limit was set when the brakes wern't as good everything took longer to stop nothing to do with how fast they could go a modern car will stop in half the distance the highway code says so i think 80 is a good option

Yes it should be
The reality is most people on the motorway do this anyway. If you stick to 70 on the inside lane, everyone passes you don't they.
So in effect the roads are as dangerous now as they would be if 80 was introduced, there is therefore nothing to lose on the safety imperative.

It might as well be 80mph on the motorway because the police really don't care!
