Well, money is the sourse of a good laptop (LOL...maybe not)
Well, if you can spend around 600-800 bucks, you should get a descent laptop.
Yes, in feb you'll get Vista loaded ones.
If you wait till then, you should get a descent HP Pavillion / Dell Inspiron.

For that price, your best bet would be to comb the ads in your area for old model laptops. Note that old model in computers is measured in months, not years so you won't be that out of date.
While it is an online store, you might consider Dell's outlet. You cannot get a new Dell for your price but they do sometimes have refurbished models that would approach $500.
You could also check and see if there is a used computer store in your area.
In any case, you will not be able to find an ultralight, you would have a hard time getting burners, and you'd probably be stuck with XP since running Windows Vista would put a strain on any system you could find for $500.

I just bought a new HP laptop from a local computer store. It has all the goodies - DVD burner, etc. For no extra charge, the store is going to install vista as soon as it's released. I have bought computers from Gateway, Dell, and locally and I will never again buy from a company that is not local. The local guys provide that oh-so valuable personal and quick service, and you don't ever have to call the company and try to communicate your issues with a person who may have a foreign accent that is difficult to understand. You may pay a bit more by going local, but in the end, you'll have more help and fewer headaches. Good luck!

I'm using an Compaq/HP laptop right now. It was like half the price of a regular HP and it uses HP parts. Umm...500? Prices are comming down, but I don't think that much! Mine was $850.00, but I got insurance and what not to, which I'm glad I did, cuz it's broke! So, I woulnd think about what you need it for first. Like, what kind of video card, how much ramm and how much hard drive space you want. What kind of processor, because in laptops better processors take more power and limit your batterie life, so it's something to think about.
I don't like apple. Feels like a toy and it's egotistical and liberal.

Look in your weekly sales paper that come with the sunday paper.
Bestbuy, Circuit city, Target and officemax has ones going for $500...there's even some at walmart.
You're not going to get a mac for $500..cheapest basic mac is at least $999.99!!

Defintely go the apple store. They are really helpful and sweet there. The laptops are on the expensive side, but they could probably help you find a nice, inexpenseive laptop. I love the apple laptop. It's so great.

If you want a good laptop which is also light and thin, you are in a difficult situation. Sony VAIO is a superb machine that will work well for you, however it's on the expensive side.
