when the government spends billions of dollars on foreign ambitions? Republicans generally talk about winning the war in Iraq but get really nasty about 'handouts' at home. Serious answers please.

For the same reason they are duped into thinking that if we pull out of Iraq an aircraft carrier full of Alqaeda terrorists is going to follow us back to the shores of America.

It's called an education deficit.

OK FIRST LET ME SAY... I grew up in violence and poverty in St Louis. OK I was broke and hated it. So I WENT TO WORK... Ive lost a ton of Jobs, Ive kept a ton more... Now, the fact is most people I meet dont like the war either. BUT the fact is. I pay over 30% of my gross income to taxes. OK now, you think thats ok. TILL you walk a mile in my shoes. I pown a semi and a small record label. OK... Now I work over 70 hours a week delivering food to stores.. I do this for a minimum of 3 weeks solid... Then when Im done I have to turn around and write checks to keep my artists in work, listen to new talent, and then decide how Im going to get all this work done. So thats 20 hours a day on my days off... I dont have employess, just partners that make it happen. They have full time jobs besides.. So 1 in 3 of my dollars goes to the government to provide for a BS war, a BS university system, and the IRS. last time I called the cops when my studio was almost burglarized I met them at the door with the burgler on his belly hoping I didnt blow him in half with my shotgun.(the "poor" guy.. he only had 2 arrests for BnE) So when I see a "poor" person playing a nintendo instead of trying to get a job (and I have) or complaining instead of trying to find healthcare you can chalk it up to lack of sleep and money why I might be miffed...

Not everyone on welfare does this, but a large majority of the people on welfare do nothing to get off it. Everyone at one point or another goes through a tough spot, and welfare can help reduce the stress of wondering where you next meal is coming from. However it was not intended to be a permanent income for people, just a little to get your feet on the ground. The goal with welfare is to help you aspire, and work towards more.

Because when you pay to feed and house poor people, you only end up with more poor people.

You think Iraq is bad? We have been fighting the War on Poverty for decades now, with literally TRILLIONS of dollar spent with no measurable progress being made; indeed we have more poor people than ever before! Talk about a quagmire!

I think that in this day and age where we are being taxed to death people are just getting fed up with the people who take advantage of the welfare system and social security. It's one thing to have a run of bad luck and need help, but there are people who have taken advantage their entire lives. Have baby after baby to keep public assistance coming in. There are also alot of people who collect SS when they are capable of working. It's to the point that I feel like I'm working to support people who don't work and won't work, because the working men and women are supporting them. There's nothing wrong with being poor, but being lazy is a whole different ballgame.

You'll have to ask the compassionate conservatives, they know. Americans don't get angry, republicans do. They cry about American values falling apart while the chasm between those with and those without constantly widens. Ten years ago???, a CEO made twenty times the average American workers earnings, today it's about four hundred times the average Americans yearly earnings. While our productivity grows our wages decline in there actual buying power. Why people support their own plundering is beyond me. That is how I see republicans when holding power.

We need to remain engaged abroad to protect our safety.

Creating incentives to NOT work and be responsible at home is a waste of funds and helps no one.

I don't think many people are opposed to helping the truly needy, whoever they are.

PS Subsidies to industries - tax credits, etc. - create incentives for those companies to engage in behavior that benefits society, such as research, exploration, etc.

Welfare payments that encourage unwed motherhood and a culture of helplessness and dependence help no one, least of all the "beneficiaries" of such payments.

We get the stereo type of those unmarried mothers dropping babies one right after another able to work but staying home being lazy living on welfare and foodstamps. In some cases its justified in others probably not.

I understand that we promote the general welfare.
It keeps us from being a third world country.

There are able bodied people who can work that are milking the system.

Why should I work to support someone who refuses to?
