Im headed to Europe in March and I want to go there for St. Pats. Than I began to wonder if it was really a holiday over there or if Americans had just created this crazy drunken holiday.

I know about how St. Patrick got all the snakes out of Ireland, I just want to know about the holiday itself.

Like any good Catholic holiday, there will be massive amounts of binge drinking, debauchery, and violence.

St Patricks day was started by an Irishman serving in the British army. The soldier wanted to remind his fellow soldiers who were Irish and British, what they were missing back home and make the soldiers happy. So he had a party for the soldiers, thus began the start of St Patrick Day parades. All because of an Irishman serving in the British Army who missed and loved his home.

From a Scotsman who thinks he's about 90% correct.
