You should be alright, as long as you were eating healthy up until this point. If you were eating foods that contained folic acid, your risk of having a child with spinal bifida is going to be much, much lower. If you were on a low-carb diet before you found out, were taking diet pills or laxatives (or other pills that strip your body of nutrients), if you were restricting your food intake, or otherwise, you may be at risk.

There is a major deformity associated with lack of vitamins in the first trimester called spinal bifida, but by around 16-20 weeks your doctor will perform a blood test to see if your baby has been suscepted to risk, and if you are over 35 and pregnant, you might want to get amniocentresis at 12 weeks or so just to make sure your baby has no birth defects.

Other problems: unless you did drugs, drank excessively, smoked, etc, you should be alright. Right now, your baby is incredibly small and the most important development, the spine, should be alright if you had at least SOME folic acid in your diet.

Folic acid is in enriched cereals, grains, pastas, certain veggies.

If you are planning a pregnancy then it is best to start taking the prenatal vitamins before you even get pregnant. But, if you aren't planning it then there is really nothing you can do about it now. Just make sure you take them now and eat right. I didn't start taking prenatal vitamins until I was 5 weeks with my first and about 8 weeks with my second. I had two very healthy babies. Don't beat yourself up for something you can't change. Just take care of yourself and your baby now. Good luck.

My sister didn't take prenatals with either of her children, who were both born as healthy as can be. The prenatals made her stomach upset. Better late than never! The best thing you can do for your child is to eat a well rounded diet with lots of fruit and veggies, drink plenty of water, and get lots of rest when you are tired. Enjoy being pregnant. I'm 11 weeks along with my second child and know what it is like to worry about every decision you make. Child birth is a natural process and women 100 years ago didn't take prenatals. :) Relax. You are doing fine!

While prenatal vitamins are a great idea, women had healthy children for years before taking them. Start now, they do have the best impast early in the pregnancy. Try a "whole food based" prenatel as they absorb the best.
By doing whole food based, your baby will get more than woman who start earlier in the pregnancy but take cheap store boughts.

No, when I first called the doctor's office, I had to wait 3 weeks for my appt. At my appt. I was 9 weeks along. Then I finally started the vitamins. I had a wonderful, trouble-free pregnancy, and a very healthy baby!

you ought to pass forward and set up an appointment with an OB which you rather prefer to apply by way of out your being pregnant and for transport. Any prenatal diet is large. ensure it has atleast 600mg of Folic Acid (for the toddler's strategies progression). Congrats and good success! :)

your baby is fine. you are not required to take those vitamins. its an option that provides you with extra vitamin intake. because your baby is pulling anykind of nutrients end energy, those pills help replenish you. i have not taken my prenatals at all, i took them in the first 2 months but they mad me so sick i stopped taking them. my baby is perfectly healthy and growing right on track.
