between 500 and 1000. If he doesn't have a male they won't be fertilized. He will need to remove them right away if he wants them to not be eaten. Make sure the fish doesn't have dropsy, a deadly disease, which is characterized by the fish getting fatter and having raised scales. Goldfish don't get too fat when they are full of eggs.

It will depend on the size of the goldfish and whether or not it has laid eggs before. The first time a large goldfish lays eggs it could have several hundred, but the more times it breeds the more eggs it will produce. Water quality and food availability will also effect how many eggs the fish will lay. Environmental and nutritional conditions dictate how much the fish can produce.
