It still reads DVDs, and it reads chosen CDroms, although not always. When it doesn't work, it simply doesn't acknowledge that there is a CDrom in the drive. Any clues as to what I should do?

first thing i would do is get a Lazar lens cleaner and run it, it may be as simple as a dirty lens, you can pick one up at walmart a good one about $8. you should clean the lens after every 10 to 20 hours of use.

Unfortunately this happened to a friend of mine and the drive had to be replaced. If you have a desktop, you can find a drive for pretty cheap. But if you have a laptop, it will most likely cost you a little more.

sounds like a driver issue, you should be able to install and reinstall (software) or simply go to the manufactures web site and get the newest version of the driver.
