i have a metal plate hanging down along the length of my exhaust, is this a heat shield ?? if so how much to get fixed or can i do without for a while until i got money, it looks like stainless steel and has been bolted on as i can see the holes any ideas

It probably is a heat shield. When you get the oil changed have the service people look to see if it can be just bolted back in place. If thats all it is, it won't cost you much at all. If it needs a couple of tac welds, it wouldn't cost much either.

Take the car to your local exhaust centre and ask them to bolt the heat shield back into place. You wouldn't want to lose it driving along the road as it may become a safety hazard to other road users.

I'd do it myself, its a heat shield, put the car on a couple of ramps, and crawl underneath and put some new bolts in it. If it falls off could be classed as using a car on the public highway in an unfit state and you could get fined for it.

sounds like a heat shield wait till exhaust cools and have a look
