Correlation is just a numerical/statistical measurement in which the number indicates the strength of a proposed relationship between a variable and an particular phenomenon. It does not connote causation, just a relationship of a variable to the phenomenon. For example, there is a strong correlation to economic factors and religious expression. Those with similar socioeconomic circumstances have a tendency to experience religion in similar ways. That is not to say that socioeconomics causes religious expression. See the difference?
