Firstly it is because at that age we start becoming ill.

We have all paid health insurance costs for all our working lives, so the argument of our being a burden on society is null and void.

Your idea of a uniform health care models an extremely good one, that could be implemented with about 10% of what is being spent on the Iraq war.

You old farts get more serious illnesses. We try to spread the cost over society as a whole. Anything else is discrimination. But where I work, people who have families pay more than single people. Everyone should have health insurance because the insurance companies can negotiate a lower price for services. To minimize cost, you have to have an advocate who is in the business to make money and has pricing clout. It's called capitalism, competition. Different providers compete with each other.

Its unfortunate that that is the way things are, But looking at the facts it's no wonder people of 50+ years of age are always going to be more of a burden on our healthcare system then some one who's 25 years of age :(

Because the people of your age group (and older) USE THE MOST HEALTH CARE SERVICES.

A uniform "universal" health care model would create more problems than it would solve. Costs would skyrocket, supply of facilities, equipment, and staff would fall, and waiting periods are very long (ask Canada).

It is unjust and immoral to ask strangers to pay your personal bills.

American health care has its problems but socialized medicine IS NOT the solution. Please read the articles in the links I provided for some answers.

You pay the most simply because you consume the most health care. You know, that sort of comes with age. It seems what you want is for other people to pay for your health care costs.
