Such as same-sex marriage bans. We have freedom of religion in this country,....I am a Christian but I support same-sex marriage because I know not everyone thinks it's wrong, and it does not hurt anyone. Why aren't the Republicans trying to make sex before marriage illegal? O yeah, becuase it wouldn't be convenient for them.

I agree they do this. Why, I couldn't tell you for the sake of me. I thought we had a Constitution and a Bill of rights.
For all the rest of you that answered. I believe the gay marriage issue is just an example the questionnaire is using to better explain his question.
The best place for you to get your answer is to ask the hard right wing Conservatives.
They usually can be found at your neighborhood bar or pub.

Who are the Christians who want to try to force their religion on others via laws? How about the atheists who are trying to force their atheism on Christians? Why is it that for nearly 200 years this country never had a problem with religion being part of the discussion in the public square, but only in the last 30 years is it seen as a violation of the separation of Church and State? Permit me to help you understand your own Constitution...Please listen carefully:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.."

Somehow, this First Amendment to the Constititution has been interpreted in the late 1960's as putting an inviolable wall between Church and State even though that's not what the Amendment says at all. The text of the words merely says that the State will not establish a State religion...like in Norway, or in Germany. The rest of the clear, simple statement says that the Government has no right to make any laws impinging on the exercise of a person's religion. Period! Words have meaning and the meaning actually can be understood. What happened in the 1960's is that a simple majority of the liberal Supreme Court "read into" the above text a meaning it did not contain!

As for same-sex marriage bans...well, I suppose if we want to overturn 4,000 years of common (not to mention Biblical) understanding that marriage is the union of a man and a woman and completely ignor the obvious implications of human biology and procreative design, and suddenly come to a conclusion that for 4,000 years or more we have misunderstood marriage, then have at it. But just because a majority of justices say it is so, doesn't make it so. Indeed, just because a majority of people in a nation say it is so doesn't make it so. Anyone who doesn't get this one simply doesn't understand human plumbing!

As for sex before marriage, it might be pointed out that in cultures where women retain their virginity until marriage and men keep their pants on until then, that the rate of divorce is almost negliable. Check out cohabitating.org and you will discover that sexual activity and especially cohabiting prior to marriage only decreases the rate of success in any marriage that may result from such a relationship. Additionally, cohabiting couples have an 80% chance that their relationship will end either before marriage or within 10 years after marriage while sexually chaste couples experience only a 10% break up rate. So just maybe those "Republicans" (I didn't realize that it was a characteristic of Democrates only to be so sexually active!), have something to say afterall.

Point 1-U said 'I am christian'-Sometimes there are people that claim to be one thing then say and do sometihng that is diametrically oppiste to the initial statement. Like U. if u are a christian u can not be 4 same sex marriage. It is oppisite of what God commands( a man and a woman cleave unto each other as one flesh :be fruitful and multiply). The Word is about order and separation. Think on that. Many will profess few will be taken.
Point 2 It doesn't hurt anyone(Mans view of Order and separation)- China is having a porblem where there are too many men for the number of women available for marriage, because of thier one child policy, people are killing female babies(be selectivly fruitful?) Now they are paying for it.
Why don't we just make every form of sexual proclivity(bent, tedency, affinity, impulse) legal, that way if someone wants to marry a goat, its all okay. Some research suggests syphilus is originaly a livestock desease(sheep)?
Point 3 Sex b4 marriage- Several states do have laws that prohibit sex b4 marriage. Government is run by men (greek-manus) and because of mans, nature and the fact that we have free will, we tend to go against Gods will. When we do what is convenient for us, we go against God, there is a punishment.
The trend in governmet is to establish control, total control, one church in the US and it wont b christian. Man protends God condems.
His Words are the law and the fulfillment of the law is Christ. U can not pick the words u like u must consume the whole work.
Forgive the sinner: forgive does not equal condone what the sinner does. For we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory. Only God can forgive sin.

I'm not so sure I'd call it the majority but many Christians mistakenly think "If it's wrong, it must be illegal." Even if that was a fair idea on it's own, it still brings up a conflict. Where you you draw the line? And who makes that decision.

Gay marriage is a bit of a different subject, though. Marriage is, by definition, a union between man & woman. If a community wants to pass laws changing that definition, they can. But you can't force gay marriage on a commuity that isn't there yet. Civil unions can be.

Personally, I would find it more the opposite. I find it sad that I can't say Merry Christmas to someone in a public place for fear of offending someone that I'm not even talking to. I don't force my beliefs on anyone, although I'm very secure in my faith. I will be happy to rationally discuss it with anyone, even those that don't believe and explain why I believe the way that I do. I have raised my children according to my beliefs and brought them to church with me, however they are able to make their own decisions as to their own faith and whether or not they go to church. I can still pray for them and for anyone else if I choose. I will say that there are many that call themselves Christians, but their actions say that they are only Christians on Sunday, which is sad. They judge, they gossip, etc. Being a Christian is easy to do. Try to be the best person you can be, believe that there is a reason for everything and that we are not supposed to understand everything that happens--we are supposed to learn something from everything that happens. Whether that lesson is simply to leave a bad relationship, to trust someone, to find another job, etc. we just have to be ready to walk through the door when it opens. I know that my opinion is just that...my opinion. You can take it or leave it as you choose.

Because they are convinced to be absolutely right. They forgot that in the past centuries people like them fought each other bloodly war and that's why now in the western nations we have separation between Church and State. Anyway the Republican Christians are not the only one that believe they are totally right, also other people from other religion might feel in the same way as well people folllowing political party like Extrem Liberal. They are all the same even if with differences between them, No one of them is able to tollerate other peoples views or believes. Of course this apply only for the extremist in each religion, philosophy, political party or social movement there are tollerant people and not so tollerant people. We have always to hope that tollerant people are the majority.

DS I am not republican or democratic I am a free thinker. What do you think our laws are based on and before you say the Constitution what is it based on? Things that are against the law such as murder, stealing, raping, assaulting, and yes even certain sex acts are illegal on a federal or state level are all things that Christian values consider to be wrong. Was the Ten commandments the morals upon which our laws are based? I would be willing to bet that in fact the majority of the founding fathers of our country were Christian and therefore based our laws on those teachings. This is just a hunch but I think it is worth checking out. With that being said if a law was passed allowing same sex marriage I would not agree nor would I spend much time worrying over it. I don't see that law causing me any harm. I do on the other hand think it is wrong for my kids to be taught in school that that life style is OK because IMO it is immoral.

This question is wrong on so many levels it's hard to know where to start.

How about starting with 'same-sex marriage ban' is not religion. It's a moral opinion. There's a difference. No one is saying the way to heaven is by passing a ban on homosexual marriage.

We have laws against all manner of things, none of which impede anyone's freedom of religion. You are free to be a homosexual of whatever religion you want or don't want whether you are free to be married to a person of your same sex or not.

Same-sex marriage hurts the whole value of marriage. Marriage is an institution created by God, or if you don't believe the bible, inherited from pre-historic ancestors, for the purpose of raising a family. Kids need a nurturing mom and a strong dad for the best outcomes in life. Study after study after study proves it. Society has an interest in giving men an incentive to stick with the mother of their children. Society as a whole has no interest whatsoever in promoting partnerships between homosexuals. The whole homosexual marriage issue is about what society can do for the homosexuals and not the other way around.

Sex before marriage has been and technically may still be illegal in several states. The laws aren't typically enforced and some have been overturned by the courts. Still, this is a red herring. Homosexuals can't marry now, it's not that anyone is trying to outlaw that. It's that people want to prevent it.

"Because it wouldn't be convenient for them." Insults (mispelled at that) are not a sign of maturity, especially when they are so broadly applied against an entire group.

Narrow minded, cock-sure and absolutely CERTAIN that their way is righteous and the best way and that their faith is the only faith. Many democrat-party christians feel this way too.

Scary how much that sounds like the muslim faith. Or the jewish faith, eh? The middle east has been fighting wars based on religious beliefs for a milennia. And for over 200 years America has (mainly) avoided that kind of situation and supported freedom of religion.

Unfortunately, the religious right and their influence on congress and our executive branch has - in six years - thrown America straight into the middle of that unwinnable war.

As for sam sex marriage, pre-marital sex and abortion: those are all insignificant issues (or should be to every single American today given the real problems we are facing) that serve as ammo for both parties to fire salvos back and forth.

Marriage, legally, is about taxes. If we removed the income tax, and instituted sales tax, we would have a truly equitable tax base, where single people are taxed as thoroughly as married people. Everyone would pay the same taxes, regardless of their social security number, legal status, or transience through our territories. Then, with money not the issue, we could see who really opposed or favored same sex marriages. I think it interesting that the Netherlands allow same sex unions, and forbid the term marriage, yet the Netherlands is often pointed to as being more liberal than the US.
