Political correctness is not something imposed on us. It is a learned social behavior. Take the racial slurs for example. It's not politically correct for anyone to say them. While you are free to say them, in general, society frowns upon it, and you will be ostracized or maligned by mainstream society. In essence, political correctness is a fancy way of saying common courtesy, the idea that even though you have the power to offend people, you don't, because you respect them.
